RVCA SPECIAL EDITION ARTIST TOM GERRARD RECENTLY TRAVELLED TO TOKYO AND OPENED ‘THROUGH MY EYES’ AT THE RVCA UPSTAIRS GALLERY TOKYO. AUSTRALIAN ARTIST TOM GERRARD EXPLORES HIS SURROUNDINGS THROUGH HIS DAILY DRAWINGS IN HIS PASSPORT SIZES SKETCHBOOKS. IN HIS FIRST EVER JAPANESE EXHIBITION HE IS PRESENTING 20 WORKS ON PAPER THAT EXPLORE A DIVERSE RANGE OF SUBJECTS AND OBJECTS THAT HE HAS EXECUTED IN HIS MINIMAL COLOUR PALETTE OF RED, BLACK AND WHITE WITH THE ODD HINT OF CHROME AND GREY.
THESE SUBJECTS ARE THE COMMONLY OVERLOOKED ITEMS IN AUSTRALIAN LIFE. EACH PIECE HAS BEEN APPROACHED AS HE WOULD A PAGE IN HIS SKETCH BOOKS. YET HE HAS SWAPPED OUT HIS PENS FOR SPRAY PAINT, INK, WATERCOLOUR AND ACRYLIC PAINTS. THIS IS A UNIQUE EXHIBITION FOR TOM AS THE DEMANDS OF LARGE GALLERIES OF HIS HOME TOWN OF MELBOURNE HAVE SEEN HIS WORK GROW IN SCALE AND PRICE. WITH THIS EXHIBITION, HE HAS TAKEN A STEP BACK FROM THE LARGE CANVASES AND WOODEN PANELS AND WORKED EXCLUSIVELY ON LARGE SHEETS OF PAPER.
THANKS TO BINTANG FOR THE OPENING NIGHT REFRESHMENTS. VIEW THE CATALOGUE OF AVAILABLE WORKS HERE.
